Angels and Demons - The War Redux

Aaaaand here's another angel and demon piece! This was a commission piece I did. The instructions were to do a variation of the original "Angel and Demons - The War" piece. The things to be changed - give the angel a more human look (i.e. hair and whatnot), give the demon and angel separate weapons to distinguish between them, and give the angel some armor to further distinguish between the two. And here's what I came up with.

I didn't want to copy the previous piece exactly, so I did a variation on the poses of the two, though the idea is pretty much the same as the original.

This was done in graphite on 11x17 paper. No references used.

I really like how this one came out. I think I may even like it better than the original. The changes I made really emphasize the good and evil aspects. The angel looks more like a 'good' warrior, with armor, cloaks, and a shield that have crosses emblazoned on them. The demon looks more like an 'evil' warrior, with spiked shoulder gear, an ax, and a wicked looking blade.

See these images below for some more detail. Unfortunately the piece doesn't look so well in the small version. Looks reeeally grainy. Check out those detailed shots though to see how cool it looks up close, :).

Your drawings depic what I consider to be a pretty accurate idea of what the Bible says about angels. I have a copy of a few of yourr angels on my blog. Shall I delete them? Can I leae them on?

The detail of the piece where you find it is well drawn for the most part. The execution and composition are both well conceived. I only have a few nitpicks.

The sword arm is very awkward looking to me. It looks like he's holding his weapon limp wristed for the sole purpose of displaying what his weapon looks like for the viewer.

The cloth kilt or robes or whichever you'd like to call them don't make any sense with the movement, nor does his hair. If he is coming down on the demon, the hair is fine for lifting up. However then, the cloth would also have to flow up into the hair. Right now it looks stiff and sticks straight out on both sides, maybe trailing a little behind him.

If he is supposed to be coming straight at your eye (which doesn't make sense since he'd fly right past his foe) then I might be able to understand the cloth, albeit loosely, but then the hair makes no sense because it would be flowing straight back away from us and not sticking straight up. You could also make the argument that he's in some kind of mid twirl, but once again, the hair is sticking straight out, as is the robes.

The light source is also inconsistent. There appears to be a source coming from below him, his back, the viewers perspective, and top. The shadows on his bent leg specifically make no sense. There is the light source on his boot, then the area on his thigh armor right above it has a shadow, and then there's more light coming from the top. It just seems to change depending on where you'd like to show more or less detail, and not consistently flow throughout the piece which really makes it seem disjointed.

I'd suggest drawing more from life and doing anatomical studies, as well as drawing cloth draped over objects with strong light sources.

Cheers

Hi, I am Java mobile phone game programmer, and I am working on my new game, called - Angels and Demons. Every time I check internet for some angel and demon pics or stuff your amazing artwork pops up. You maybe interested to take part in that project. Unfortunately I cannot pay as I am creating this from my home but hope to be able to sell it when is finished. Check out my web site, I'll add A&D;stuff in a day or two.

Cheers

do you think you could do one of just this demon but facing the viewer? i think it could make a good tattoo.
