Battle Angels

In the Bible, there are quite a few mentions of angels. Contrary to the popular notion of little babies with harps and wings in the sky, the Bible portrays them as truly spectacular creatures. Almost always when an angel appears, they first thing they say is "Don't be afraid". This corresponds to the many descriptions of angels carrying swords and engaging in warfare. It's that idea that I like to capture in these Battle Angel pieces. The ferociousness of The Heavenly Host.

Her Guardian Angel I always loved the idea of guardian angels. If they do indeed exist, this is how I always pictured one; a sentinel forever watching for your well-being, receiving orders directly from heaven about how to proceed about protecting you. Not only that, but it'd be this big dude with a heavenly sword ready to kick major butt of any punk demons who happened to try to harm you. Lol.

Banished Angel Another angel piece, =). The title basically explains my idea - this angel was banished (and punished) for some sort of misdeed; and of course there is a clue to what sort of misdeed it was. This pertrified angel must now sit and think of his actions for eternity - and believe me, that's a long time!

(Comments and critiques are welcome!!) [There's also a huge version of this if anyone wishes to see it]

Polemistis Agkelos ". . . there before me was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of the finest gold around his waist. His body was like chrysolite, his face like lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude." (Daniel 10:5,6)

Polemistis = Warrior (greek) Agkelos = Angel (greek)

This was done in graphite, touched up just a little bit in photoshop. No references were used. All comments welcome, =).

Angels and Demons - The War Here's the piece I've been working on off and on for the past week or so. Thought I'd expand my repetoire - I've drawn a handful of angels, but who do angels fight? Demons of course! I had an idea a little bit ago of a supernatural battle being waged between the knights of heaven and the minions of hell - and then i had a thought which followed the aforementioned thought - "Wouldn't it be sweet to have an angel hurtling down from the sky and a big hulkin demon rising from the depths and have them collide in mid-air battle??". Well, yes, I thought it would be rather sweet. So this is what I came up with.

I'm thinking i'll start a "series" about this. It's just so much fun to draw for…

The Guardian So, in continuing with the angel theme, here's another piece I had come up with. I wanted to have a picture of a guardian angel standing guard over his watch. But not just sitting there, but actively protecting - so I drew a kid huddling on the ground, protecting himself from whatever imminent danger is coming...and over him, a hulking, massive, ever-watching angel throwing an impenetrable umbrella of protection over him. Of course, completely unknown to the boy, that he need not be afraid.

I couldn't come up with anything to draw in the background, so I'm in the process of doctoring this up all nice and neat in photoshop.

Oh, the reason the angel has no face is because he's…

The Guardian - Colored So I cleaned this up and colored it in Photoshop! It took me forever to finish this piece. I was in an artistic funk for the longest time. I think I'm out of it now though. Filling in the surroundings for this pic was fun. I wanted to have a feeling of power coming from the angel, giving him a real supernatural feel. That's also one reason I left the face out - to leave a feeling of mystery and supernaturality about it. Of course, it was also an excuse not to have to come up with a face! :D.

Overall I'm happy with the picture. The wings were fun as usual. Wish I could have drawn some more of the background though. The pencil and the digital worked overall, but I still see areas where…

A Brief Respite "And it came to pass on a certain night that the angel of the LORD went out, and killed in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when people arose early in the morning, there were the corpses—all dead." - 2 Kings 19:35

This was a sketch that turned into a full blown piece. Done in graphite pencil with a little touching up in photoshop. My idea was to have an warrior angel, settling down on the mountainside, momentarily resting, gathering up his strength and about to take off to continue waging the ever-raging spiritual war. He has the grit of grim determination on his face and the sword-ready hand of a warrior.

Tried to work out good composition…

Angels and Demons - The War 2 So in my interim of not drawing (too busy until the holiday break), I realized I had not posted the semi-colored version of this pic. I think I may personally like the straight black and white one a bit better - but it does add some interesting dynamics with a bit of color. Of course, the next step is to color the angel and the demon! But one step at a time, :D.

Angels and Demons - Face-Off The next piece in my Angels and Demons Series. The concept behind this one was to have to supernatural warriors throwing down their weapons and going at it old-school. Pure unbridled rage is what drive them. The angel with holy fury unveiled as he descends from on high. The demon with unholy vengeance unchecked as he ascends from the depths. They bring the pure elements with them: sky and light symbolize the angelic while flames and darkness characterize the demon.

I elected to go with black and white with this one as well. Symbolically it goes with the piece - black and white, good and evil, and overall it fits with my style of drawing.

I used a reference for the…

Preparing for Armageddon 1 The Last Battle. Each angelic warrior dons their ageless armaments. Ancient pieces fashioned in the holy fires of heaven's forges. The highest Angels did not bother with armor - they were shielded by their own glory. The vast majority of heaven's army however, girded themselves with the gear that had lasted them through the generations. Every piece, fashioned to perfection, each fabric woven with heavenly care. They were prepared. The Last Battle would be theirs. And there it was - the Trumpet Sound. The Battle begins.

For this piece I delved into a bit of ancient symbology. I pulled from a couple of places.

I am Prepared So here's another addition to the Battle Angel Series. This is the colored version of "Ready for Battle". Click here to see the original.

I'm really satisfied with how this came out. This is a color scheme that I've never really used before. It's pretty much all brown, warm colors. I added some deep shadows to add some intensity to it, since brown can sometimes be kind of drab. Again, this is one of my few attempts at female angels - and I think my first attempt at a female battle angel...since this one turned out all right, I'm inspired to do some more! :).

Angels and Demons - The War Redux Aaaaand here's another angel and demon piece! This was a commission piece I did. The instructions were to do a variation of the original "Angel and Demons - The War" piece. The things to be changed - give the angel a more human look (i.e. hair and whatnot), give the demon and angel separate weapons to distinguish between them, and give the angel some armor to further distinguish between the two. And here's what I came up with.

I didn't want to copy the previous piece exactly, so I did a variation on the poses of the two, though the idea is pretty much the same as the original.

This was done in graphite on 11x17 paper. No references used.

I really like how this one…

Preparing for Armageddon 2 The Last Battle. Each demonic warrior dons their fire-hardened armaments. Ancient pieces fashioned in the unholy fires of the dark pit. The darkest of demons did not bother with armor - their weapon was their sheer evil. The vast majority of Hell's army however, girded themselves with the gear that had lasted them through the generations. Every piece, fashioned to kill, each fabric interwoven with the Darkness. They were prepared. The Last Battle would be theirs. And there it was! That hated Heavenly Trumpet! The Demonic Host lifted their horn and sounded a truly wicked proclamation. The Battle begins.

Storming Hell And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
-- Revelations 12:7-8

Michael, the ArchAngel, descends from On High, in full power and glory, unleashed now that the time has finally come to storm the Gates of Hell!

So I'm starting to get some time to work these days. Was working on a request for a good friend (who's been waiting a year!) and needed something to warm up on. I found something old I was working on and whipped it into shape in a couple hours.

This is my first fully digital painting! There aren't…
